Greening the Treasure Island Music Festival

Hosting a festival at such a beautiful site reminds us all of the importance of minimizing our carbon footprint.  We are working diligently to decrease our emissions, divert our waste, and offset our impact.  Below are just a few of the programs we will be implementing at the festival.  We will continue to add more items to this list, so keep checking back to see what we’re doing and how you can help!

Leftover Food to be donated to Local Shelters

The Treasure Island Music Festival has partnered with Rock and Wrap it Up!, a national, non-profit organization whose mission is to feed all those who hunger using safely recovered edible leftover food from major events. At the end of each night, food which has been prepared but not served will be picked up by Rock and Wrap it Up! volunteers and delivered to food shelters in both San Francisco and the East Bay.

Since Rock and Wrap it Up’s! inception in 1990, over 15,000,000 pounds of food have been picked up, feeding over 30,000,000 people. For more information on Rock and Wrap it Up! and how you can become a volunteer or implement this program in your local community through your schools, town government, major corporations etc., please go to www.rockandwrapitup.org.

Trade In Your Old Cell Phones at TIMF

The Treasure Island Music Festival is asking cell phone owners to answer the call and donate their used cell phones. Bring your used cell phone to the official TIMF Recycling Store and trade it in for some festival goodies (check back soon for details on what you can get!) The Recycling Store will also be accepting water bottles and other recyclables/compostables collected from the festival grounds in exchange for various gifts.

We are partnering with CollectiveGood to recycle and reuse old cell phones to keep them out of landfills. Cell phones contain hazardous materials such as mercury, cadmium, nickel and gallium arsenide that could contaminate ground water if discarded in landfills. Donated phones are either refurbished and sold primarily in Latin America, or they are scrapped for parts. Either way, they stay out of landfills. Any portable cell phone is accepted, excluding bag phones or vehicle-installed models. All donors should deactivate the donated phones before turning them in.

About CollectiveGood: CollectiveGood is the nation’s premier cell phone recycling company, seeking to convert millions of idle, yet functional cell phones back into reuse in the developing world. CollectiveGood refurbishes and recycles cell phones in an environmentally friendly manner. For more information, visit www.collectivegood.com, or call: 770-856-9021.
